Character

Name: Quinn Morgendorffer
Fandom: Daria
Gender: Female
Age: 16
Time Period: Just after "Is It Fall Yet?"
Wing Color: Light pink
History: The second daughter born to a mostly typical family, Quinn has spent her life soaking up attention and praise from everyone. Her parents, her relatives, cute boys, other girls. She was one of those babydoll-cute little girls who grew up to be a prettier teenager. She spent most of her life in Highland until her family moved to Lawndale, where she became instantly popular at the local high school despite being new and a freshman.

For her first two years of high school, Quinn's life revlolved around popularity, fashion and dating. She joined the school's Fashion Club, who appointed her their vice-president. The group was stable and happy for the most part, and while most of their big ideas never got anywhere they had fun coming up with them. She embraced the persona of shallow fashionista, never caring for schoolwork or other aspirations, something that annoyed her parents, teachers and older sister to no end.

But even back then, she suspected...no, she knew there was more to her than that. She knew she wasn't as shallow as she wanted others to believe, that she was smarter than Sandi, Stacy and Tiffany. That there was more to life than being pretty and popular.

She knew, and this scared her. Catty Sandi, airheaded Tiffany and neurotic Stacy weren't the most reliable friends, but they were all she knew in the way of social groups. To be accepted by them meant more to her than living up to her potential, and she knew if she let on that there was more to her than what met the eye they would drop her in a heartbeat.

It was Sandi she feared the most. Like their mothers before them, the girls had an intense rivalry that grew stronger every day, but unlike their mothers they had scraps of a genuine bond. Because of this, Quinn's feelings towards the Fashion Club president ran hot and cold, fearing her to hating her to loving her.

So she hid her depths, preferring the predictable and familiar to the unknown.

Then came the PSATs. All of the Fashion Club scored in the 900s and to Quinn's shock, she realized that not only could she do better, she wanted to do better. Before long she not only developed an interest in her studies, but a crush on her geeky-cute tutor David Sorenson. Sadly, her first attempt to date a guy based on his personality and intellect crashed and burned before it even started and Quinn was left heartbroken by David's rejection.

She was back to her old, comfortable life when junior year started up, but now she was at something of a crossroads. Her feelings for David had sparked a love of learning and a desire to raise herself above her standards, but she still craved the approval of the Fashion Club. Homework was boring and cut into her precious shopping time, but getting decent grades was so gratifying.

She honestly doesn't know what to do.

Personality: Quinn is the poster girl for perky, from her bouncy hair to her haughty steps she exudes "look at me! I'm pretty!" everywhere she walks. She prides herself on her appearance, taking special time out for all kinds of spa and beauty treatments and dressing in only the latest fashions-if they're flattering, of course!

Image is very important to Quinn. Not only her appearance, but how others see her. Cute guy walks into the library and sees a kid asking to read to her? She'll pretend she loves reading even if the only things she reads are Waif magazine and romance novels. She, along with her fellow Fashion Club members, have also undertaken several charity projects; not necessarily for the benefit of others but for the sake of making themselves look like Good People.

She's a boy magnet, and she knows it. Guys fall all over themselves to do things for her, to talk to her, just to be in her presence. And she'll gladly let them, as long as they don't try anything funny with her. Despite all her fawning over cute boys she's a bit of a prude; she won't kiss on a first date, slow dance before the fifth and isn't keen on the idea of touching one's nude chest at a modeling session.

Naturally she was embarrassed to share a school with her brainy, antisocial sister Daria and wasted no time telling everyone Daria was her cousin. It's not that she HATES her sister or anything...she just doesn't particularly want to be seen in public with her or for people to know they're related. Lucky for her, Daria feels the same way.

But for all her shallow posturing, she's a sweet girl with a kind heart. She really does care about others, even in her misguided attempts to help them (makeovers aren't the answer to everything, after all) and has a major soft spot for cute animals. So while her motives might not always be pure, her heart is definitely in the right place.

Strengths:: Quinn is a social butterfly, able to make friends anytime and anywhere. People are drawn to her sunny nature, and her social skills are just about perfect. She knows how to work a room, how to gain favors, how to influence others and how to stay one step ahead of the manipulative Sandi. She can read people fairly well when it counts, or at least she believes she can.

She's very passionate about the things she loves, especially fashion and cute animals. When she cares about something she'll put in as much effort as she can...without getting her hands too dirty, at least.

And even though she denies it, Quinn is actually quite intelligent. She may not care about things like science or history, or reading beyond fashion magazines and romance novels, but if forced to actually try she can put together an essay worthy of an A, or even score a B on a test.

Weaknesses: Quinn's biggest flaw has always been that she's shallow. Everything relates back to appearance and fashion sense to her, even the college she wanted so badly to score a thousand on the PSATs for is nothing more than a party school. And when she tries to appear deep, it's hard to tell if it's genuine or rooted in yet more shallowness-does she honestly care, or does she just want people to think she's deep?

She puts too much emphasis on how she looks in the eyes of others, no doubt in part thanks to the company she keeps. It's the main reason she hides her intelligence and treats having a brain like it's something to be ashamed of (as is clearly evidenced in her poor grades). Even if she does long for more substantial companionships and pursuits, depth is a new and scary thing to her after so many years of denying she has any. Her shallowness is more a crutch than a mask.

Quinn also has a tendency to use boys, manipulating them with her cute charms in order to weasel sodas, favors and fancy dates out of them. They'll end up blowing all their wages for a week, just for maybe a peck on the cheek. This is another result of her present company, three boys who basically serve as her harem and live to kiss her feet. It's not that Quinn does it to be heartless, she just doesn't know any better. Plus she's a little squeamish about getting too cozy with boys in general.

Samples

First Person: Hey, where am I? Oh, where are my clothes? And my magazines, and my purse, and everything? ...wait. Are those...wings?! No, it can't be! They're like angel wings...oh no. Oh, no, is this...Heaven?! Did I die?! No no no no no, this can't be happening, I can't be dead, I had a date with Matthew tonight! And Sandi will never forgive me if I miss the meeting because I died! Oh, everyone's going to be devastated...maybe even Daria will miss me. She'll be even more of a misery chick than before! Ohhh, someone please tell me this isn't happening!

...oh! A journal...and it's empty. Um, okay. Dear diary, today I woke up dead! This is the worst day of my life!

Third Person: Part of the reason Quinn liked to surround herself with people and talk on the phone constantly was because she hated thinking. About anything deep, at least. If Daria was anything to go by, too much time alone made you think too much and it made you sad and gloomy and cranky. Quinn didn't like being sad unless she was watching a sad movie on TV. So for the last few weeks she'd thrown herself into meeting people and getting involved in events.

Being busy meant less time to think. About last summer, about her low PSAT scores...about David. David, cute and nerdy and funny, the first guy she'd ever liked for his personality and not his looks. He'd taught her so much about so many things, opened her mind to things she'd never found interesting before. The two of them sitting at the kitchen table, laughing and working, were the best days of that summer.

I like girls with a certain amount of depth. His words rang in her head every time she remembered their last day together. If she'd been too young for him it might have hurt less, college guys dating younger girls wasn't the best idea anyway. But she was too shallow. Too silly. Not smart or deep enough for him, not his kind of girl.

She wondered if this was how all those boys felt when she dumped them for not being cute or fashionable enough. Hurt, sad, confused.

Stupid.

...damn. She was thinking again. Time to find something to do.
